The Ponsonby Experience

Ponsonby Intermediate opened in 1976 as a result of a demand by the local community for an intermediate school to meet the needs of pre-adolescents who are at an age requiring specialised tuition.

The site of the school is historical. Situated on the corner of Pompallier Terrace and Clarence Street, it was originally a brick-works for Carder and Sons and was used in the days of the horse and cart. Remnants of old kilns, bricks and horse tackle have been found on our grounds.
Over the past two years much building work has been going on. This has ensured all the buildings are modern, attractive and bright with excellent resource/storage facilities. All rooms have brand new classroom furniture. The teaching spaces are all calming and stimulating environments for learning. We are also in the process of a “Garden Beautification Programme”.

We have thirty classrooms divided between seven areas. Area six (rooms 21-25) and Area seven (rooms 26-30) have recently been built due to roll growth. The classrooms comprise “normal” classes as well as more specialist rooms, these include: Music Suite, Performing Arts and Dance studio, Computer Laboratory, Photographic Darkroom, Science Laboratories, Art Studio, Food and Bio Tech room, Fashion and Design Tech room, Structures and Mechanisms room, Communications Information and Networking Lab, Multimedia and Electronics Workshop, Mathematics Centre, Guidance Centre.

All these teaching areas are well equipped. We also have a Hall, updated free standing Library and Administration Block comprising: offices, sickbay, staffroom and teacher workroom.

Our school site is approximately three hectares in total area. In addition to the buildings we have a number of large spacious playing fields and asphalt court areas. The court areas include tennis, basketball, netball, volleyball and other minor type court games. The main field has had major remedial work completed to upgrade the drainage system and has a Fitness Trail around its perimeter.
